How To Look For And Avoid Bed Bugs In Hotel, Or Motel Rooms?
Check everything in the room carefully including mattress, bed, bed sheet etc. Inspect the mattress by pulling back the sheets and mattress protector. Check if there is any reddish dark brown spot, dead or live bed bug. Also, check the headboard and its backside. Don’t forget to check behind any painting of the wall, floor surface, and floor baseboards at the head of the bed. Never put your luggage on the carpet or the bed directly. It’s better to leave your luggage in the shower stall or bathtub until you have inspected everything in your room.
To avoid bed bugs in a hotel or motel room, check everything as above and then follow as stated below:
01. Use double-sided masking tape or painters tape – application time about 15 minutes.
This is a very simple barrier method without any chemical. Any bed bug tries to crawl toward you will get stuck on the tape. So, apply the tape around the edge of the headboard to stop them from crawling from behind the headboard onto the bed.
Warp the tape completely around the box spring or mattress. But try to apply the tape as low as possible to prevent bedbugs from climbing up the blanket overhanging the bed. Make sure to warp above, not on, a dust ruffle or bed skirt and also make sure the tape is in contact with sheets. Remember, any void will allow bedbugs to enter into bed and your total efforts will be useless.
Warp the bed legs if you don’t use the next item on the list. But be careful while you use high tech. tape on the hard surface, as this could stick to or damage the finishing of the surface. Before you check out, just pull out the tape and throw it out. Sticky tape will be difficult to remove.
02. Use Bed leg cups – set up time about 5 minutes:
This is also a non- chemical barrier method. The cups fit under the bed legs and prevent bed bugs from climbing up into the bed from the carpet or floor surface. The cups are lined with talc making the surface too slippery for bedbugs to climb.
03. Zippered travel sheet/sleep sack – set up time 5-7 minutes:
This is another barrier method and will stop bedbugs on the 3 sides that it’s sealed. But make sure the travel sheet you choose is zippered and sealed all the way around. A travel sheet that closes with velcro, ties or buttons will do no good. Any travel sheet you buy should be washable and dryable in high heat. Remember, only high heat will sanitize your travel sheet by killing bedbugs, their eggs, and prevent them to enter into your home.
A travel sheet has the added benefit of protecting you from other travel bedding ills dust mite allergens, scabies, harsh detergents and unclean sheet, blanket, and pillows.
04. Diatomaceous earth – optional, application time about 10 minutes:
Shortly, it’s said DE which is a non-toxic insecticide. It’s a fine talc-like powder made of the crushed exoskeletons of diatoms, tiny sea creatures. But you have to make sure you use only the food grade DE. Any DE is other than food grade, not safe for you, your kids or pets. Apply DE around the baseboards of the room, particularly near the bed and in the bed frames also.
Remember, DE use is not fit for 1 or 2 night stays. Because it takes time to start working. So, if you stay in a place for one or two weeks then it’s useful and would be practical.

05. Extra large garbage bags – set up time varies depending on how much stuff you have:
It’s a very cheap, safe, easy and effective barrier method. A large and heavy-duty garbage bag is easy to pack and bedbug proof. So, anything you keep in garbage bags will resist or prevent bedbugs, but you have to seal them well and make sure there is no way the bedbugs can enter.
Any clothing can be kept in smaller type bags and seal them before placing into the drawer. Always keep the luggage in the garbage bag to prevent bedbugs from hiding in many compartments, cracks, and crevices that exist in all luggage, regardless of hard and soft.
06. Bedbug spray – optional:
Finally, you can use bedbug spray which is very instantly effective. It’s faster than any method discussed above. But remember, it’s only for a short time treatment. Since you are staying in the hotel for a few days only, you can use this method to prevent bedbugs.

But that’s a permanent and recommended solution for those who can afford.
